As spring temperatures transition to a summer boil, Cloudcroft, New Mexico is a great destination to escape the heat for a variety of outdoor activities. The bonus is great local food, including Dave’s Cafe, Mad Jacks, Cloudcroft Brewing Company, which is always welcomed after a long day in the sun.

Located in the Lincoln National Forest, the Willie White & Wills Canyon Trail is an easy-to-moderate hike, with increased trail activity from May to October due to amazing temperatures and wildflowers. The trail is mostly covered by trees with a few open meadows, but don’t let that fool you as the sun beams right on through the trees! You can begin at either Bluff Springs Recreation Area or at Telephone Canyon along Water Canyon Rd. Trails are well defined, maintained and have signs along the way. If you decide to venture out on this hike, or another hike in the same general area, let someone know where you’ll be, bring a map and remember to bring water. Most importantly, be sure to leave the trail in the condition you found it and have fun!
